NTSB Investigates One of the Deadliest Bus Accidents in Texas
Bus accidents involving curbside motorcoach services are on the rise, the latest of which is said to be one of the deadliest in Texas. The charter bus was on its way to a casino hotel near the Mexican border when the driver allegedly lost control of the wheel and rolled over, resulting in the death of 8 passengers and injuries to 44 others.
The National Transportation Safety Board has sent investigators to determine the cause of the accident.
Curbside Motorcoach Services and Accidents in Texas
Curbside motorcoach is a bus transport business model which involves taking passengers from one city to another or a destination other than a traditional bus terminal, such as sidewalks and parking lots. Curbside motorcoach operators usually pick up passengers from sidewalks or parking lots, travel directly from one area to another or to a popular destination, such as a casino.
The typical motorcoach measures 35 feet in length and can seat up to 50 passengers. A NTSB study in 2011 found that curbside carriers have higher fatal accident and death rates than conventional carriers, due to driver violations.
Common factors in bus accidents include:
- Driver fatigue
- Driver fitness or qualifications
- Driver exceeding legal driving hour limits
- Driver distraction from cellphone use
- Driver medical problems
Operator or bus company violations can also lead to fatal injuries in bus accidents, through:
- Failing to provide seat belts
- Failure in checking and maintaining equipment
- The hiring of unqualified driver/mechanic
- Violations of safety regulations
- Commissioning of a vehicle that was previously declared ‘out of service’
